My research interests are in the area of technology enhanced learning with emphasis on learning and behavioral analytics, computer supported collaborative learning, and personalization of learning experiences. I am member of the steering committee of the Society for Learning Analytics Research. In my (scarce) spare time, I try to maintain active the blog T2T. Techies meet Teachers where I comment on issues related to technology when used in learning experiences.

I am currently (or was at some point) involved in the following grants:

  • Using Video Annotation to Develop Student Self-Regulated Learning. Office of Learning & Teaching (OLT) Grant, Co-lead with Shane Dawson, University of South Australia. The proposal outlines the development of a social annotation platform called Collaborative Lecture Annotation System (CLAS). The project investigates how CLAS can be used to leverage the products of lecture based instruction to engage students in social learning, develop and evaluate self-regulated learning, and establish learning analytics to support teaching and learning practice. Partner Institutions: The University of New South Wales, The University of Sydney , The University of British Columbia (Canada), Athabasca University (Canada).

  • Radical Transformation: Reimaging engineering education through flipping the classroom in a global learning partnership. Office of Learning & Teaching (OLT) Grant, Leader: Carl Reidsema, University of Queensland. Emerging amongst the many calls to transform engineering education is a push to replace the traditional lecture with online video ‘content’ and couple this with collaborative active learningon campus. The interest in this Flipped Classroom approach is mirrored by the global MOOC phenomenon. Both point to the need to reimagine the online and on-­‐campus environments toensure successful recruitment and retention of students, whilst maintaining the focus on learning outcomes. One large-­‐scale (1000 students) Flipped Classroom implementation was demonstrated at the University of Queensland in 2012 and has generated significant attention due to its unique pedagogical design both nationally and internationally. This project pools expertise from six US and Australian universities in a Learning Partnership to situationally analyse, develop and fast track dissemination of this transformation in real time. The process ofthis work builds on new forms of open scholarly communication with the goal of accelerating systemic change in engineering education
