Welcome to Guoqiang Mao's Website

Associate Professor Guoqiang Mao, PhD, SMIEEE

I obtained my Master degree from South East University, China in 1998 and in the same year I came to Australia for PhD study on an IPRS scholarship sponsored by the Australian government. I obtained my PhD degree from Edith Cowan University in February 2002. After completing my PhD thesis in June 2001, I worked at the US-based industrial company “Intelligent Pixel Incorporation” on optical switch design for about one year, first as a Senior Research Engineer and became a group leader six months later. In June 2002, I joined the University of Wollongong as a lecturer (tenured). Six months later, I moved to Sydney. I joined the School of Electrical and Information Engineering, the University of Sydney in December 2002 where I am an Associate Professor (tenured) now. I hold a visiting fellow position at Research School of Information Sciences and Engineering, the Australian National University and a Senior Researcher position at National ICT Australia. I have extensive collaboration with researchers in local industry, e.g. NICTA, Optus and DSTO, in local universities as well as researchers in overseas companies and institutions.

I am the principal supervisor and the associate supervisor of a number of PhD and Research Master students at the University of Sydney and the Australian National University.

I have published two books, three book chapters, and over 100 other papers in journals and refereed conference proceedings and these publications have been cited more than 1800 times. I (in collaboration with other researchers) have received and completed a number of competitive industrial and academic research grants from the Australian Research Council, National ICT Australia, Optus, DSTO, US Air Force Office of Scientific Research and Asian Office of Aerospace Research & Development, whose total value exceeds A$5 million.

I am an editor of IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology and received “top associate editor award” for outstanding contributions to the IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology in 2012. In the past five years, I have served as a program committee member in 31 international conferences. I was the publicity co-chairs of 2007 ACM Conference on Embedded Networked Sensor Systems and 2010 IEEE Wireless Communication and Networking Conferences, and am the leading editor of the book “Localization Algorithms and Strategies for Wireless Sensor networks”. I was listed in the 25th Anniversary Edition of Marquis “Who's Who in the World” (2008) and in the 9th (2007) and 10th (2008) Anniversary Edition of Marquis “Who's Who in Science and Engineering” for “exceptional achievements in Science and Engineering”. I am a regular reviewer for many of the leading journals in my field including IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems, IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, IEEE/ACM Transaction on Networking, IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications and IEEE Transactions on Communications. I am a Senior Member of IEEE.

My areas of interest include wireless multihop networks (e.g. vehicular networks, mesh networks mobile networks, delay-tolerant networks, opportunistic networks), wireless sensor networks, wireless localization techniques, applied graph theory and network performance analysis.

If you are an academic staff, a researcher, or an engineer interested in research cooperation, you may want to have a look at my research profile and publications. You are welcome to send me an email for research discussion or requesting further information.

If you are a highly motivated student with a strong academic record and are interested in taking the challenges in the broad area of wireless multi-hop networks, wireless sensor networks, wireless localization techniques, wireless network modeling and performance analysis and network quality of service, you may find relevant information on my research areas and how to apply for enrollment and scholarships funded by my research projects, the university and Australian governments here.

If you like to know more about myself, visit my personal page.

Update May 17, 2013: I am currently advertising one PhD scholarship. The scholarship is open to both Australian and international students. You may find details of the scholarship here
