Directors Message
Research activities in the group centre on applied signals and systems analysis with particular emphasis on image processing.
Signature Image Processing (or SIP) is a novel technique for analysing sampled data sequences. It is currently being applied to gas metal arc welding and resistance spot welding, as well as for processing of external eeg signals in collaboration with Dr Armin Mohamed, Director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Centre of Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
An industrial system for fault detection in gas metal arc welding, WeldPrintTM, is being commercialised. The technology, which is based on SIP, won the $100,000 inaugural Peter Doherty Prize for Australasian Innovation in 2003.
Research is under way on semiconductor defects and in other areas of image processing. The group makes use of a well-equipped welding laboratory, as well as 30 computer server network which optimises the signal processing performance of signature images both in eeg and welding applications.
Image Processing News
A strong collaboration has been established with Osaka University, the leading university for welding research in Japan. The joint research is in the areas of monitoring narrow gap welding, and optimisation of signature image fault detection for specific industrial applications.
