Directors Message
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the website of the Centre of Excellence in Power Engineering Research Group.

The research group was established in January 2007 when Professor Agelidis was appointed as the Director of the Power Engineering teaching and research programs at the University of Sydney through his appointment as the EnergyAustralia Chair of Power Engineering.

Since then, we are indeed very fortunate to have benefited from the generous support of some of the most prominent leaders of Australian engineering. Building on the major contribution of EnergyAustralia in its funding of the Chair, a private gift from Sir William Tyree has provided significant impetus for our power engineering programs and for this purpose we have also received key support from a number of organisations and individuals, including the Australia Power Institute, ABB AB Corporate Research Centre Sweden, ABB Australia Pty Ltd, NEMMCO Ltd and Mr J Rector, a Sydney University Alumnus.

Professor Agelidis' vision to establish a world-class power engineering program at the University is being realised via the most comprehensive plan which was prepared within three months of his appointment. The plan aimed at addressing the skills shortage in power engineering with the following key elements:

  • support and enable leading research and teaching in power engineering
  • attract support from industry leaders towards a sustainable and viable future
  • enhance national and international activities to increase its impact and exchange expertise

The plan has generated palpable momentum at the University of Sydney which is providing the key investment required for our new power engineering offices and infrastructure to become available in March 2009. Such teaching and research infrastructure will be unique in Australia and one of the most advanced of its type in the world; among the most valuable features will be its suitability for the kind of project-based learning experiences that are as close as possible to the "real" industrial practices out there to give our students the expertise and skills that are becoming increasingly critical to industry’s needs. Creating this infrastructure will enable the University of Sydney to meet its ambition of providing a long-term competitive advantage for Australian engineering.

We welcome your support and involvement with Australia’s leading power engineering program and please let us know how we can assist your endeavours in search of excellence as:

  • an undergraduate student
  • a PhD research student
  • a Master student
  • a visiting scholar
  • an industrial organisation
  • a community group

It is my pleasure to invite you to join our team to help us make the impact required to secure:

  • our energy future through modern power engineering solutions
  • the supply of skilful world-class engineers
  • relevant research programs to support industry’s needs
  • expertise for our society’s path towards sustainability.

We are excited to have you as a visitor to our website. For further information please feel free to contact us. We look forward to hearing from you and interacting with you through so many activities the group organises.

    Professor Vassilios G Agelidis
