British Bulldog Goes Canyoning!

by Max Midlen

Not bad John, not bad at all. Not that we ever going to question John’s ability of map reading, but when his reckoning of where we are matches up exactly with that of the United States Air Forces’ finest bit of multi million dollar piece of kit it is reassuring.

This particular weekend I learnt that as well as canyoning , finding the canyon is a sport as much as the "going down bit" and I’m sure Alan, Megan and Geoff will back me up on that as well.

So after just a couple of wrong directions by the good old map reading technique purely done just to check the accuracy of Alan’s G.P.S, passing some spectacular lookouts, we arrived at the intended overnight camp which we all agreed was much better than carrying a nasty heavy tent.

As we arrived in very good time due to John’s map reading skills and nothing to do with Alan’s new toy, we had time to do a couple of canyons.

I’m not sure where it was but we walked down a bit up a gully and onto a saddle made friends with a couple of bullants and along a ridge eventually looking down into a gully so a scramble down off a convenient tree and down into the upper end of Bridge Canyon No tracks here. Bridge Canyon was named after the You’ve guessed it, Rock Sculpture

But it was a great little trip as non of us knew anything about it. It was here I was introduced to Jeff’s very descriptive comment ooohh woowww….. which summed it up rather well. Back up the ridge, pass the not so nice bullants, down to the Saddle, over to the left and agreat little abseil into Bubble Bath – a good little canyon to finish off the day particularly because the end of it is 100 metres level walk to the overhanging rock we use at the roof of our tents.

The following day Criky Canyon was the subject of the day. Again John had done this one before, but never walking in from where we were camped.

This ought to test his skills!! - needless to say his route finding was nearly perfect. Perfect and we would,nt have found a great little gully full of massive tree ferns. This looks like the one.

A sporting little abseil and we’re off. I think the canyon is aptly named epecially the end which is particularly gobsmacking – Jeff going into objective hyperdrive. John still impressed – Alan wishing he’d brought his hassleband Megan cooly taking it all in.

A great way to end a great weekend
