Server Types

Several types of servers can be accessed using a Web Browser. The most common ones are:

http
Uses the HyperText Transmission Protocol to access a World-Wide Web server. For example: http://www.usyd.edu.au/ connects to the Official Sydney University Web Server, and http://www.eelab.usyd.edu.au/ connects to the EIE Undergraduate Personal Web Pages Server.
gopher
Uses the Gopher protocol to access a Gopher Server. For Example: gopher://gopher.su.edu.au/ connects you to the University of Sydney Gopher Server.
ftp
Uses the File Transfer Protocol to access an FTP Server. For example: ftp://aarnet.edu.au/ connects you to the AARNet FTP Server.

There are also several other types of servers which can be accessed using a Web Browser.
