Why Do We Adjust the Vertical Gain?

• Because the signals being measured using the CRO will have a wide range of amplitudes, it is important that we can adjust the vertical gain of the input in order to allow us to view the signals correctly.
• Below are two examples illustrating this fact.

The example display view we see on the left is a 30Vpp A.C. signal, and 10mVpp signal being viewed on the same vertical scale. Because we are viewing on a scale that allows us to see the 10mV signal clearly, the 30V signal has been forced past the boundaries of the display.

• So we now see the importance of the Vertical Gain Control as the RED signal in both of the above examples are not accurate representations of the 30V or 10mV signals.
