Selecting the Mode of Operation
- The CRO has four Modes in which the input
signal(s) can be displayed. These modes are as follows:

1. Channel A
Operation:
- When the mode selector is in this position we
find that the only signal that can be viewed on the display is
one that has been applied to the input labelled Input Y
which is the coaxial input on the left side of the
Mode Selector.
- It should also be noted that the controls in the
diagram above on the right hand side of the
Mode Selector will have no effect on
the signal being viewed on the display as they are not
functional when the CRO is in Channel
A Operation.
2. Channel B
Operation:
- When the mode selector is in this position we
find that the only signal that can be viewed on the display is
one that has been applied to the input labelled Input X
which is the coaxial input on the right side of the
Mode Selector.
- It should also be noted that the controls in the
diagram above on the left hand side of the
Mode Selector will have no effect on
the signal being viewed on the display as they are not
functional when the CRO is in Channel
B Operation.
3. Dual Operation:
- When the CRO is being used in Dual
Mode it becomes a much more powerful
device than when it is used to measure just one signal at
a time.
- Here the CRO can accomodate the input signals
from both of the
input terminals. This allows the comparison of the two
input signals not only in terms of quantitative results
but also qualitative observations.
- It allows us to superimpose for example the ouput
and input signals of a circuit and observe any
distortions due to the circuit such as:
- Phase Change
- Change in amplitude of the signal
- Change in Frequency
- Or any other distortion of the
signal.
4. Add Operation:
- As is expected the function of this mode of the
CRO is the geometrical addition of the input signals
applied to channel A and B leaving one signal on the
display.
- Subtraction can also be
achieved using the invert
function by "pulling out" the Vertical Position
Control for channel B.
