CALL FOR PAPERS
IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications
Special Issue on

Broadband IP Networks via Satellites
Deadline for paper submissions: Dec 15, 2002

http://www.ee.usyd.edu.au/~abbas/CFP/IEEEJSAC-Sat2004.htm

Satellite systems have been an important element of telecommunications networks for many years serving, in particular, long distance telephony and television broadcasting. The involvement of satellite in IP networks is a direct result of new trends in global telecommunications where Internet traffic will hold a dominant share in the total network traffic. The large geographical coverage of the satellite footprint and its unique broadcasting capabilities as well as its high-capacity channel combined with readily available Ka Band spectrum will retain satellite systems as an irreplaceable part of communications systems, despite the high cost and long development and launching cycle of a satellite system.

This issue of the Journal on Selected Areas in Communications is devoted to the numerous research activities toward realization of the global broadband Internet access via satellite networks. The issue aims to gather state-of-the art technical papers outlining the research and progress in the field of satellite IP in detail. The papers are solicited from key industries involved in development of new satellite systems including those involved in providing broadband Internet access to home and small business users, DVB-RCS (Digital Video Broadcast – Return Channel System), in-flight Internet systems, and other forms of Internet access through satellite as well as from academia working on networking, mobility management, quality of service, database management and caching, and physical channel.

Papers describing all aspects of realization of IP services through satellites at all layers of the network stack are solicited. Specifically, papers are solicited in the following areas, but not limited to:

  • Emerging satellite systems and architectures
  • Satellite role in 3G and beyond for wireless IP
  • IP protocols for satellite
  •  Satellite routing management
  • Location and mobility management for satellites
  • Satellite network control and management
  • TCP/IP performance over satellite
  • Hybrid satellite and terrestrial networks
  • Modulation schemes for satellite IP networks
  • Satellite/terrestrial resource allocation algorithms
  • Link performance models for satellite channel
  • Reservation protocols for satellite access
  • Internet services over satellite and in-flight Internet
  • Standards status (ITU, ETSI, TIA, IETF, …)
