My main research interest is on On-Board Internet Access for mobile systems. This involves looking at how passengers in mobile systems (such as planes, ships and trains) can effectively and efficiently have the best internet experience possible, very similar to the high speeds available on land. Hence passengers will not only be able to send and receive email, and browse the web, but also engage in real-time multimedia applications such as video conferencing, which is of great interest to a business user, or streaming audio/video suited to an average bored passenger. Additionally there are more critical uses such as telemedicine, and telesecurity, which allows a team of medical experts on land assist in medical procedures on-board, or allow real-time surveillance and monitoring from ground.
The initial system will look at how an aircraft can use such a system (being the most frequent means of long-distant transport, and carrying more business travellers than any other form of transport system) and later we will generalise the system to suit other mobile systems.
Specifically we are looking at ad hoc networking between commercial aircraft, its feasibly, practicality, routing, and overall system requirements.
