I was born in Yichang, a city by the Chang Jiang river (also known as Yangtze River ) in China.
I obtained my Master degree from South East University, China in 1998 and in the same year I came to Australia for PhD study on an IPRS scholarship, an extremely competitive scholarship sponsored by the Australian government. I obtained my PhD degree at Edith Cowan University in Perth in February 2002. After completing my PhD thesis within two and half years' study in June 2001, I worked at the US-based industrial company “Intelligent Pixel Incorporation” on optical switch design for about one year, first as a Senior Research Engineer and became a group leader six months later. In June 2002, I joined the University of Wollongong as a lecturer (tenured). Six months later, I decided to move to Sydney. I joined the School of Electrical and Information Engineering, the University of Sydney in December 2002 where I am a Senior Lecturer now. I am seconded to National ICT Australia as a Senior Researcher since December 2003. I am actively engaged in teaching activities. I have taught a number of undergraduate and postgraduate subjects and supervised the thesis projects of over 50 final year undergraduate students. I am the principal supervisor of three PhD research students. A further two research Masters and one PhD research student under my supervision have completed their degree, receiving outstanding comments on their theses. When I worked at the US-based industrial company “Intelligent Pixel Incorporation”, I participated in a R&D project on the “Intelligent Reconfigurable Optical Switch” as a team leader. This project produced a prototype of world’s first commercial polarization-independent reconfigurable liquid crystal optical switch. It paves the way for a new generation of optical packet networks. I have published one book, two book chapters, and about 50 other papers in journals and refereed conference proceedings. In the past five years, I (in collaboration with other researchers) have received a number of competitive industrial and academic research grants whose total value exceeds A$3 million. Completion of these grants not only enables me to acquire research skills but also enables me to obtain managerial skills and entrepreneurial experience that enable me to identify mission critical problems and to conduct research that is applicable to the needs of industry. I have made significant scientific contributions in the areas of graph theory, sensor networks, network performance analysis and optical communications. I am a regular reviewer for many of the leading journals in my field including IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, IEEE/ACM Transaction on Networking, IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications and IEEE Transactions on Communications. In the past five years, I have served as a program committee member in 21 international conferences. I was the publicity co-chair of 2007 ACM Conference on Embedded Networked Sensor Systems and am the leading editor of the book “Localization Algorithms and Strategies for Wireless Sensor networks”. I was listed in the 25th Anniversary Edition of Marquis “Who's Who in the World” (2008) and in the 9th (2007) and 10th (2008) Anniversary Edition of Marquis “Who's Who in Science and Engineering” for “exceptional achievements in Science and Engineering”. You may find more detailed information about my research and teaching on this website.
